As if this year hasn’t been handful enough, we now have “maskne” to add to our, “Are you serious, 2020?” list.
Maskne (it’s simply mask and acne combined) can be brought on by friction, skin type, and other challenges that may arise when wearing a mask for extended periods.
We’ve definitely seen this on the rise at Renew with our clients and want to bring you our favorite tips to prevent and treat “maskne”.
Why Do I Have “Maskne” And Others Don’t?
Even though maskne can share the (not so) love equally, it can choose favorites (just like acne ).
You may be at higher risk if you experience skin challenges like—
• Skin Sensitivity
• Rashes/Bumps
• Perioral Dermatitis
• Eczema
• Rosacea
• Acne
• Allergies
In addition, if you’re a healthcare professional—or someone who uses a mask extensively—your risk of maskne may increase.
“Maskne” Prevention
Even if your skin’s in the high-risk category, you have options when it comes to prevention.
CHOOSE YOUR MASK MATERIAL WISELY
Although you may not have a choice if you work in a healthcare setting, if you can be picky—cotton may be your best bet.
Cotton is breathable, has less friction, and may minimize skin irritation.
KNOW YOUR ALLERGIES
Don’t forget—especially if you purchase a mask—it can come with pre-treated chemicals, or made with synthetic fabrics.
These chemicals—including highly fragrant laundry detergents—can be a major skin irritant.
It’s best to opt for cloth masks that are natural fiber and unscented laundry products.
WASH YOUR MASK
A major culprit for maskne is a dirty mask—especially if you wear makeup.
Wash your mask’s regularly—again, with an unscented detergent—and store them in a sanitary bag for safekeeping.
CLEANSE AND MOISTURIZE
Although you don’t want to over-cleanse (and risk disrupting your natural skin barrier) you do want to be vigilant of cleansing your face before and after you wear your mask.
This especially goes for any healthcare professional. I mean, what feels better than taking your mask off after a long day at work and cleansing your face? One of the best feelings.
Don’t forget to follow cleansing with moisturizing.
This will keep your skin balanced and protect against friction and irritation that can lead to maskne.
SKIP THE MAKE-UP
Keep the sunscreen and tinted moisturizer, but you can kick your make-up—especially the area where your mask is—to the curb.
Make-up can irritate the skin and create clogged pores which may lead to a breakout (and we know you don’t want that!).
If you love make-up or the simple act of getting ready every day—focus on your eye area (get your eyebrows done; refresh your Botox; make those eyes pop!).
“Maskne” Treatment
Even with knowing your skin triggers and utilizing preventative measures, maskne can still rear its irritating head.
Here are some treatment options if prevention isn’t quite cutting it for you—
SPOT TREATMENT
If acne is flaring it may be time to bring in the big acne products for treatment. Speak with your skincare professional for what works best for your unique skin type.
TIME TO TALK TO A SKINCARE PROFESSIONAL
Between prevention and spot treatment, it may be time for you to talk to a skincare professional.
Perhaps you have skin build-up and clogged pores and need an enzyme or chemical peel.
Maybe your skin is ready for medical-grade products.
Or if nothing else, it’s time to work out your skincare challenges with—or without—maskne.
Whatever your skincare dilemma, a Medical Aesthetician (like Charmayne) can lead you and your skin in the right direction.
2020 may have thrown us for a loop or 2 (or 3, 4, 5!), but we’re still here—maskne and all.
Keep in mind our favorite tips to prevent and treat “maskne” and if it all gets too overwhelming, remember everything’s temporary and take a drink from your gratitude glass and cheers to the beauty in your life!
