What happens when you break out, or notice fine lines and wrinkles that weren’t there before, or really, experience any skin challenge that plagues you?
As humans, we may want to—
• hide (not leave the house)
• cover-up (use extra make-up for coverage)
• add a filter to photos
• feel shame and confusion
• physically try to fix the “problem” (over-pick, over-cleanse, over-exfoliate, etc.)
What if there were other options when it comes to dealing with our skin concerns?
The idea of skin acceptance and skin positivity is being discussed now more than ever and we think it’s time to talk about it, too.
We often hear that “flawless” skin is the goal but attaining it can be a troublesome journey without embracing skin acceptance and understanding why it matters for your health and wellness.
What Is Skin Acceptance, Exactly?
If you’re on social media, you’ve probably heard the terms acne acceptance, skin positivity, and skin acceptance being used.
But what do these terms really mean? Is it just another trendy movement?
We hope not.
As we talk more about mental health awareness, with that comes the discussion of self-esteem and confidence and how our skin can affect those areas.
This is where the concept of skin acceptance comes in and how you can incorporate it more into your life.
A major sidenote: skin acceptance in no way means you must neglect the care of your skin all for acceptance. Skin health is the goal; flawless skin is not.
Skin Acceptance and Why It Matters
MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS
In a world of photo filters and just-right lighting, it can be easy to hide behind those tools.
But when someone bucks the “norm” and posts a picture of their not-so-covered-up acne , or a rosacea flare-up —or shows up to lunch with a bare face that exposes hyperpigmentation—it can be a shock.
A shock that can create a ripple effect of skin acceptance.
Because you realize it’s not just you that experiences challenges with your skin. You suddenly don’t feel so alone.
And that matters for mental health.
Because it’s time to normalize…
Skin texture.
Pores.
Acne/breakouts.
Inflammation.
Aging/fine lines/wrinkles.
Most of us experience these everyday skin challenges (yes, we know there are skin unicorns out there who don't!), yet we’re trying to banish them and work towards a world where they don’t exist.
That may never happen, but daily skin health and skin acceptance can.
CARING FOR YOUR SKIN MATTERS
Skin acceptance doesn’t mean glazing over skin health and throwing your skincare routine out the window.
Caring for your skin still matters.
The mental health exhaustion and fatigue that can come with it may be optional, or at least less than what you’re used to.
It’s time to pick and choose skin battles.
Having acne can be brutal on self-esteem especially when you’ve tried everything to “get rid of it”.
We’re not suggesting you stop the journey of skin health; we’re simply saying—what if you could go about it with more grace and less angst?
• Seek a skincare professional you trust.
• Discover a skincare routine and lifestyle choices that promote the health of your skin.
• Be aware of self-talk that encourages acceptance for your skincare journey.
• Find an uplifting and supportive community with similar struggles as your own and know you’re not alone.
FEELING IN CONTROL MATTERS
One of the hardest aspects of facing a skin challenge is the lack of control.
You feel like you’ve tried everything but nothing’s working, so it can be easy to give up or lose hope.
In today’s culture, we desperately want quick fixes and immediate results, even though that’s typically not reality.
This is where healthy expectations can help you feel in control.
• Remember that skin is complex and the more you can keep an open mind and experiment with what works for you, the less you’ll need to compare your skin to others.
• Skin challenges happen—just like life challenges—so keep that in mind when you experience a flare-up.
You may not be able to control what happens TO you, but you can control how you react.
• Take a walk and some deep breaths.
• Reach out to a supportive community.
• Seek a new skincare consultation.
• Embrace skin acceptance and acknowledge at least one positive aspect about yourself that doesn’t involve your skin.
• Shift the desire for skin perfection to skin health.
Skin acceptance—fad or for real? This one is up to you.
Yes, skin imperfections can be brutal and take a massive toll on our mental health.
But what if we didn’t let it take us completely down?
What if we embrace skin acceptance as we continuously work on the best version of ourselves?
