What body hair camp do you consider yourself to be a part of?
The full-on 80’s band camp that loves all the hair, in all the places?
The no hair loving camp, except on my head?
Or are you the in-between camp who prefers a little hair there and definitely no hair there?
If you’re in the camp that wants to get rid of some (or all) body hair — we have your guide to remove unwanted hair with a little help from laser hair removal!
What Is Laser Hair Removal?
“Laser hair removal targets melanin (a pigment) that’s found in the hair follicle. The heat from the laser damages the hair follicle and most often destroys it or dramatically inhibits hair growth.”
– Dr. Rochelle Elijah
The focus for removing unwanted body hair with laser hair removal is on
hair reduction over time.
This is especially helpful for anyone who has coarse, thick, dark hair who essentially shave their legs and underarms in the morning and by the afternoon — itching the hair they just shaved.
Who Is Laser Hair Removal For?
“The best candidate for laser hair removal is someone who desires a major reduction in their body hair to accompany a lifestyle that doesn’t require much — if any shaving; in my experience arms, legs, bikini area and underarms perform best.”
– Charmayne Torres-Trujillo, Medical Aesthetician
We know shaving can take up a lot of time and resources (hello last minute Target run for razors on a Sunday night), so
laser hair removal would be ideal for you if you’re over the hassle of shaving and everything that accompanies it (potential rash from razor, extended time shaving, and money spent over a lifetime on razors and shaving cream).
What Are The Benefits of Laser Hair Removal?
We mentioned that your investment in razors may greatly decrease; here are some more benefits to keep in mind for choosing laser hair removal:
Downtime – Little to no downtime and this treatment can be done during your lunch hour.
Long-Term Savings – Forget buying shaving cream, depilatories and those razors in bulk! Not to mention the confidence you’ll have when you can rock your swimsuit without any bumps or redness around that bikini line.
Is Laser Hair Removal Painful?
Ok, you’ve decided to swear off razors and now you want to make that laser hair removal appointment and blast those hair follicles. You’re singing good riddance to that unwanted hair, but then you start to ask yourself, “Hold on, how much is this going to hurt?”
Well, here’s the deal: some say it feels like the continuous flick of a rubber-band (remember that annoying kid in middle school who did that to you?), while others would beg to differ.
Depending on pain tolerance, some say it feels less than the rubber-band flicking, and some argue, “No way, it hurts more than I thought!”
If pain is a concern, request a test area to be done to see if the procedure is right for you and keep in mind that a numbing cream is usually used for your comfort.
How Many Laser Sessions Are Needed?
Typically, 6-8 laser hair removal sessions are required so you may experience the maximum benefit of hair reduction.
Remember that the area of the body being treated, hormones, hair thickness, skin color and health condition all play a role in how many sessions you will need for your individual treatment plan.
Intermittent treatment may be needed every year due to potential hair growth in certain areas, as well as maintenance for stubborn hair that needs extra “help”.
Laser Hair Removal Risks
Removing unwanted hair via laser hair removal is considered a safe treatment and with any treatments using laser and heat, there are things to consider…
• Darker hair and lighter skin are the best candidates for targeting pigment because the darker skin can potentially absorb the laser light which causes it higher heat and can burn the skin.
• If you have hair that is fairer the laser may not be as effective due to lighter pigment.
• Laser hair removal can be incompatible with photosensitive medications like antibiotics. We also recommend abstaining from the use of skin care products that contain alpha hydroxy acid and retinols that can leave your skin hypersensitive during and post-treatment.
If you don’t know for sure what medications could interact with laser hair removal, check with your doctor before treatment in addition to having a conversation with your medical spa provider.
If you’ve come this far – thank you – because it sounds like you’re ready to ditch the razor and remove unwanted hair.
Whatever hair camp you find yourself in know there are options for dramatically reducing hair in areas you no longer want to take the time to shave or spend money on razors over your lifetime.
Because who wants to worry about unwanted hair when you’re on the beach, rockin’ a bikini line you’re proud of?!
